Support Hours and WordPress Logo Fun

As Matt mentioned in the September Wrap-Up, the Automattic crew is heading to Québec City to work on some top-secret projects. It worked well when we closed the email support system for our London Support meetup, so we’ve decided to do it again.

Support will be unavailable from 10 a.m. EST on Friday, October 9 to 4 a.m. EST on Monday, October 19.

Of course, our team will still be monitoring servers and services while we’re out to keep you blogging smoothly and safely. In the meantime, we encourage you to read through the Support docs and make use of the WordPress.com forums (which are full of friendly users like you) if you need a little help.

wp-wheelWhile we’re away, we’ll be running a contest to see who can use the WordPress logo in the most creative way. Take advantage of your camera, graphics applications, crayons, and anything else you have at your disposal. Create a post on your WordPress.com blog, upload your image or images, and leave a comment here with the URL of your post. Please make sure to leave the URL to your post in the comment text or the entry will not be accepted.

wp-milkWe’ll get you started by providing some official WordPress logos, but the rest is up to you. I’m sure you can do better than the photos I’ve included here. We’ll keep an eye on submissions and post some of them to the @wordpressdotcom Twitter account during the week.

The deadline for submissions will be 4 p.m. EST on Monday, October 19.

We’ll create categories based on the best submissions and run polls to let you select the winners. Prizes will include WordPress.com upgrades, swag, and maybe other surprises. Good luck!

The Image Widget, Plus News from Support

Last month, the Support team (also known as Happiness Engineers) got together to brainstorm new ways of providing you with the features and resources you need.

Out of that meetup came a number of improvements and features, like the RSS Links Widget, introduced earlier this month. Another is the Image Widget, launching today.

In the past, it was necessary to use HTML in a text widget to display images in your sidebar. Now all you have to do is plop a URL in the image widget. The rest is done for you. If you’d like to set a title, alternate text, and image size, it’ll do that, too.

And there’s more cool stuff coming your way:

We’ve made some improvements to the Support contact form, and a better search for Support is in the works. We’ve made some internal changes, too, that will help our growing team answer your questions even more efficiently.

There’s now a Hugs page to display some of the positive feedback we receive from those of you who write in to Support. It brightens our day to hear that we’ve helped out, so we’re sharing a bit of that love. :)

Maybe most excitingly, we’re going to start providing Support in other languages — a much-requested feature. The first of these will be French, with several others to follow. We’ll post announcements here when each is launched.

Support Hours and Updates

In the coming week, the Support crew (seen among the lovely faces here) will be meeting in London to brainstorm new ways of providing you with the resources you need. While us Happiness Engineers are putting our heads together to churn out some big ideas, we’ll be closing our email support system.

Support will be unavailable from 10 a.m. EST on Friday, August 28 to 4 a.m. EST on Monday, September 7.

Of course, our team will still be monitoring servers and services while we’re out to keep you blogging smoothly and safely. In the meantime, we encourage you to read through the Support pages and make use of the forums, which are full of helpful users like you.

Printing Option for Packaging of mdcm3002 Final Works

Dear All (mdcm3002)

Following up on the online packaging lecture …which has a few wrong dates! Sorry….!

For students who would like to try the special system described on the online Packaging lecture Week 11. This is one of many options, and completely up to the individual. This may work well for you or it may be easier to be self sufficient and completely independent. Up to you!

RE: George Khut support for printing & packaging of final project.
George Khut has said…
I will be providing Lab support and working on CPRU video documentation this Thursday 12-5, and Friday 12-5
then week 13: Thursday 11th (9-5) and Friday 12th June  (12-5) and will do the printing on those two days.

Students wishing to package discs with the JewelBox (hard clear plastic) and print on the custom perforated sheets,  will need to download from MEDIA_STU

a copy of

Either

“dvd-jewelcase-photoshop-template-20081016″ (easiest)
Or
“dvd-jewelcase-illustrator-templates-20081015″

The finished kit costs $5 – they should pay cash to reception staff on level 3 (the new Iain), and bring the receipt to me as proof of payment

Before I will print their documents –to minimize waste of special paper and everyone’s time – they need to provide a proof-read laser printed version.
then wait for me to print them out on Thursday and Friday – if its busy, this can take a while.

Otherwise they can do it ALL themselves…

Students who just want to package discs in the standard DVD slip-case (buy themsleves at $2 store)
will need to download photoshop template from MEDIA_STU

“simple-dvd-case-slipsheet-photoshop”

- the library will have an A4 colour printer on Level 2, they can print docs there, if they export final image as JPEG or PDF
- be sure to switch off ’shrinking to fit on page’ option when printing.
- this is an A4 document with trim lines (use a blade and ruler to slice edges along trim lines)
- slip cover into dvd case – thats it!

MoFo Blogging

IMG00054.JPG, originally uploaded by raenmiro.

Blog your mobile phone pictures through flickr!

I have decided to affectionately name this MoFo blogging as in Mobile ‘Foto’ blog.

All you need is a camera phone and an email application on your mobile.

Below are 2 different ways of doing this, depending on how you want these to show up in your blog. One is for a Widget and the other is for an actual blog entry with your photo.

Widget Directions:

1- Go to this flickr page

2- If you are logged in, you will see a unique email on the right hand side of the page. This is all you need.

3- Compose an email on your phone to your super secret email address that flickr have provided and attach the photo from your phone.

4- Send email and watch it magically appear on your blog.

Note for young players: You will need to have the Flickr widget up and running in your sidebar to see these. You can add this by going to Appearence-Widgets-Flickr (WordPress) and adding your account details in the edit field.

Blog Entry Directions:

Alternately you can post a blog entry containing your photo.

1- Follow above directions to obtain your personal email from flickr.

2- Configure your blog details with flickr here

3- Set up your email posts so they automatically go to your blog here

4- In the bottom right hand coner of the page once you click save you will see another email. This is the email you need to send to for your photo to be published as a blog.

5- Compose your email. Depending on how you have configured your settings, what you write in the body area of your email should come up as the written part of your blog.

Best of luck to all!

Edit: I’m fine tuning this myself so let me know how you are all doing!

Embedding videos from youTube in WordPress

Just above the field where you enter text for your post you should see “Upload/Insert” followed by a set of  5 icons.

Click on the 2nd icon and a window will open.

Now click on the “From URL” link. Here you can paste in the URL to the youTube video you want to embed, then click on “insert link” and that’s it, the video should then be embedded.

For more options click on the “YouTube instructions” and you will be taken to an explanatory page. There’s also a video at the bottom of the page explaining all this

How To: Mo-blogging

As Biggie said, mo’ money, mo’ problems..MO’ BLOGGING!

Well…not quite, although if you have ever read Kanye West’s blogs (proceeds with caps lock)…anyhow back to the topic.

Blogging from your mobile is easy, fun and crazy wild! Most of you will have phones with web browsing, and WordPress has a mobile website so it doesn’t chew through all your available bytes by loading up useless pictures and frames that render websites useless on phones.

HERE WE GO!

Step 1:
Load up your web browser on your phone.

Step 2:
Go to http://m.wordpress.com

Step 3:
You will see a log in screen. Log in. Start to feel extremely cool and savvy.

Step 4:
Write a post on your ridiculously cramped mobile keypad. Think to yourself, maybe this could have waited till I got home…

Step 5:

PUBLISH! Sigh and give yourself a satisfying pat on the back.

As you can see, all easy to follow! Go forth mo-bloggers!

(I’m really enjoying mo’…)
